TECHNICAL DESCRIPTIONS OF CABINET MAKING

I. Foreword

To it Government always tries make ready competent labour deep its area each.


Indonesia Skills Competition (Lomba Keterampilan Siswa = LKS) National to XVII at Jakarta for Vocational Highstudent all Indonesia is that of form reality one of effort in developmental human resource that did by Government via Directorate Technical and Vocational EducationDirectorate General of Management for Primary and Secondary Education The Ministry of National Education Republic of Indonesia.


Information for Competitors
Working Instruction

1. The cabinet must be made as per drawing and instructions
2. Machines may be used for construction of project. Only Dovetail joints must be cut 100% by hand.
3. The first ½ hour is allowed for checking the wood pieces and studying the drawing, once started working, the competitor will not be allowed to ask questions and change materials.
4. All the pieces will have to be sanded to receive a polish.
5. During the fabrication, all the subject’s pieces must have the candidate’s number.
6. The face makings and setting out of the door and drawer must be handed to the judges for marking.( C and C2)
Note: on the drawer you only need to set out dovetail sides, front and
Back ,it must be made 100% by hand tools
7. Before gluing sections D1, D2, D3 and D4 it must be handed to the judges for making.
8. All surfaces must be fit for polishing (lacquering
9. The competitors must keep track of the time themselves; time will be stopped only in the cases of illness or accident.
10. Safety instruction will be given by the workshop manager.
11.The large circular saw are to used on the veneered panels only , use smaller circular saw for door and drawer component etc. If the machine is in use
12. Leave your own measuring equipment (rule etc)on your cabinet after finish.
13. On the miter top and bottom panels you may use loose tongue or lamello.
14. Total Working time 22 hours.
15.A template for top shape work is available for layout only, it is to be returned to judges immediately after use.


Project : Shoji Cabinet
Materials: Solid mahogany, Plywood and Sliced mahogany veneer
Constructions: This Shoji Cabinet is a traditional and contemporary design,
The component are constructed as follows:
Top Surface
Solid timber edge tongue and grooved to top veneered panel. Attached to construction rail by pocket screws.
Construction Rails
Mitered with lamello biscuits and mortise and tenon joints at legs.
Cabinet
Mitered with lamello biscuits and dowelled to top and bottom plate
Door
Constructed with bridle joints with Grazing- bar .
Drawer
Hand cut dovetails
Cabinet
Body cabinet connected to legs by screw fitting.

The ISC Committee determine, by decision of the General Assembly In accordance with the Constitution, the standing orders and the Competition
Ruler, the following minimum requirement for Skill No.24:

1. Name and description of trade.

The name of trade is Cabinet Making
Cabinet making covers mainly the manufacture, in small workshops,
of furniture and built-up units in wood , solid, veneered, plastic- coated or painted.
The cabinet maker may also work in larger plants as specialist.

2. Scope of work at the IVTC
The test project consists of practical work only.
2.2 A 22 hour test project must be drawn and photograph must
be presented to prove that the project has been made.
The test project must have a drawer and hinged component.
to quality for test project selection all documentation must
be presented including drawing to correct specification.
The drawing must be to the scale of 1:1.
2.3 The theoretical knowledge tested is limited to that necessary to carry out the practical work.


3. Practical work
3.1 The competitor has to carry out, independently, the following
tasks:
- Manufacturing a piece of furniture according to a drawing
Description, using the materials supplied.
3.2 The appropriate technical skills are:
- Reading and interpreting drawings and written instructions.
- Knowledge of components and construction techniques.
- Planning processes and sequences.
- Joint manufacturing by hand or machine.
- Making frame from solid timber
- Working with veneers.
- Setting and fixing hardware.
- Making and adjusting moveable parts to allow smooth movement
- Machine profiles and other operations in a safe manner.
- Obtaining dimensional accuracy within given tolerances
- Cleaning up of surface to specifications

4. Theoretical Knowledge
4.1. Interpretation and execution of drawings and sketches according to ISO standard
4.2. Knowledge of materials and processes.

5 Materials.

5.1. Solid wood.
- Up to 40 mm thickness.
- Good quality.
- Degree of dryness adapted to the climate.
- Precise in form dimensions
5.2 Panels.
- Plywood with solid wood
- Good quality.
5.3. Veneers
- Sliced veneers in luxury wood.
5.4 Hardware
- Magnetic Catches
- Key plates and bushes
- Various hinges.
- Stays.
- Touch latches.
- Knock down, ready to assemble fittings.
5.5 Additional materials
- Screws.
- Pins
- Joint tongues of plywood
- Dowels, diameters Ø 8x 40 mm
- Biscuit (Lamello) No. 20
- PVA glue, small plastic bottle for each competitor
- Adhesive - contact glue
- Wax
- Cleaning rags.
- Abrasive papers of various grits180, 240,320.

6. Workshop equipment
6.1 Each competitor will have a minimum working area of 3 x 2,5 m.
Each bench must be adjustable in height to allow for tall People.
A planning bench 1m by1 m by 0.9 m must also be supplied.
A plywood panel 1m by 1m must be supplied to display the Competitor’s drawing.

6.4 The following machines and equipment will be made

available for cabinetmaking competitor only:

1 Surface planning machine with guards
1 Thicknesser machine
1 Band saws with guards
1 Radial Arm Saw
1 Circular saws with table, scriber saw, riving knife and guards..
1 horizontal boring/ mortising machines.
2 vertical boring machine
1 hollow chisel mortiser
1 Edge – Finishing sander
2 Mitre Saw Portable
All machine with dust extraction where applicable.

The organizer must also supply the following power tools:
- Minimum 2 miter drop saws, T.C.T blades
- Minimum 2 circular saws with fine T.C.T Blades mounted in a table.
- Minimum 3 portable routers mounted in tables with adjustable fences
- Minimum 3 portable lamello.
Note: The Workshop supervisor or machine the workshop machine attendant is responsible for safety measures on the machine, including the use of ear protectors and safety goggle.

7. Test project marking

7.1. The experts will decide together on the test project, the marking
